The Plunge-Line Engineer
Level 9 Boss · Widow's Peak
The Plunge-Line Engineer is one of the boss threats a player meets in Desperados Destiny, sitting at level 9.
Field notes
The railroad's chief demolition engineer, sent to plant the summit charges that will blow the blast line across the mesa's face. He carries blasting caps and a contingency for anyone who tries to stop him. He has done this to seven mesas already.
What you are walking into
The Plunge-Line Engineer is level 9, carries 135 health, and is classed Omen, a boss encounter. That makes it a mid-low threat for a character finding their feet. It punishes over-commitment, turning your weaker hands back on you, so patience beats aggression here. Every exchange resolves through the Destiny Deck: you draw five cards, choose what to hold, and the resulting poker hand decides how the action lands. Suit matches amplify the result, so the same fight against The Plunge-Line Engineer plays out differently each time you take it on.
Where to find The Plunge-Line Engineer
The Plunge-Line Engineer is encountered at Widow's Peak. You will need to have discovered and travelled to that location before it can appear as a target, and travel between regions carries its own risks — routes are rolled for interception, and a bad roll puts an encounter between you and your destination. The full entry for Widow's Peak covers what else is there.
What it drops
A kill pays 600 experience and between $21 and $56. Its loot table can yield Widows Peak Survey Map, Saltpeter and Eagle Feathers. Drops are rolled per kill, so a full set takes repeat hunting. The first time you kill any species it is also recorded in your Field Guide, which pays a large one-off experience bonus and counts toward the Guide's completion milestones.
