Caliche Flats
Wilderness · Settler Territory · Danger 5
Caliche Flats is a wilderness in the Sangre Territory, the 1869 frontier setting of the free browser MMO Desperados Destiny.
The place itself
A sun-blasted expanse of caliche hardpan where the southern railroad extension was surveyed. A cluster of canvas tents and a transit theodolite mark the camp of the surveyor Platt, who filed two versions of the route assessment — one for the board, one for himself. The flats bake white under the noon sun, and the only shade is the lee of the supply wagons. Agent Donahue's men know what is in that tent, and they came to burn it.
What you notice standing there
Platt's tent still has both ledgers inside it: the survey filed with the board, and the real one, with the real grade numbers, in a locked strongbox under the cot. Nobody's touched the theodolite in weeks — its lens is caked white with caliche dust, same as everything else out here that isn't actively burning.
Getting there
Caliche Flats is a wilderness; it sits in the Settler Territory zone, in the Frontier region, and expects a character of at least level 13. It carries real risk; travel here is not something to do underlevelled. Travel in Desperados Destiny costs energy and takes in-game time, and a route can be interrupted — the danger rating of the road feeds directly into how often that happens. Locations must be discovered before you can travel to them directly, and discovering one for the first time pays experience.
What hunts here
6 creatures are known to range around Caliche Flats: Alkali Creature (level 14), Caliche Bandit (level 9), Caliche Coyote (level 4), Dust Haunt (level 7), Flats Rattlesnake (level 6) and The Survey Master (level 10). Each is recorded separately in the Field Guide, and a first kill on any species pays a substantial one-off experience bonus.
